    Fight, Flight, Freeze & Fawn

Understanding the four survival responses and how they show up in daily life.

When your nervous system perceives threat, it automatically activates survival responses. These are not choices — they're hardwired protective mechanisms.

    The Four Responses:

Fight • Mobilizing energy to confront the threat • Physical signs: tension, clenched jaw, urge to push • In daily life: irritability, arguing, criticism, control

Flight • Mobilizing energy to escape the threat • Physical signs: restlessness, racing thoughts, urge to flee • In daily life: overworking, overthinking, avoiding, busyness

Freeze • Immobilization when fight/flight isn't possible • Physical signs: numbness, dissociation, feeling stuck • In daily life: procrastination, brain fog, feeling paralyzed

Fawn • Appeasing the threat to stay safe • Physical signs: people-pleasing tension, collapsed posture • In daily life: over-accommodating, difficulty saying no, losing self

    Important to Know:

    • • These responses are automatic and adaptive
    • • They helped you survive
    • • There's no "wrong" response — each served a purpose
    • • They can become chronic patterns when we don't feel safe

    Moving Forward:

Healing isn't about eliminating these responses but: • Recognizing when they're activated • Understanding they're not who you are • Building capacity to return to regulation • Choosing responses when you're safe
